Lois Jean Fernandez's Obituary
Lois Jean (Genaw) Fernandez went to be with the Lord on October 30, 2025 at the beautiful age of 98. Lois was the 10th, and final, child born to George & Julia (Faucher) Genaw on June 8, 1927. Lois grew up on Market Street and was a lifelong resident of Algonac. She was also a lifelong member of St. Catherine’s Church which was located across the street. Her mother would hold her by the hand and walk her across the street every Sunday to attend mass. Lois was a quietly spiritual woman who lived out her faith daily. She read her well-worn Bible daily, was slow to anger and was quick to forgive. She took a genuine interest in everyone she met and was a true friend to many. It was in the 1940s, after WWII, that she met her future husband, Fred, at a local dance hall. They were married on October 19, 1946, settled in Algonac and raised 6 children. Together they mourned the loss of their 7th & 8th children, twin boys who died at birth. They shared 53 beautiful years together before Fred’s passing on May 6, 1999. Lois spent many years as a homemaker who loved to bake & cook. It was in the 1970s that she decided to join the work force. After working at Anchor Bay Plastics and Morley’s Candy Company, she found her dream job as a baker. She worked at Anthony’s Restaurant, which soon became McRae’s Big River Grill, for nearly 30 years sharing her love of baking with hundreds, possibly thousands. Every dessert she made was a true showstopper, but it was her Key Lime Pie that she was best known for. Last but not least was Lois’ love for her family, who remained close throughout the years. Her home was always filled with joy, laughter and, of course, good food & desserts. She is loved & will be missed by many. Lois is survived by her children Chico/Fred (Karen), Julia (Fernandez) Coffey, Paul (Julie), Gail (Kevin) & T.J., 6 grandchildren, 7 great- grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren & several nieces, nephews & cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, 9 siblings, husband Fred, twin sons, son David, Son-in Law Roland Coffey, grandson Joe Coffey, grandson Casey Coffey, grandson Kevin Coffey. As per Lois’ humble wishes, there will be no services. Cremation arrangements made by Young-Gilbert Funeral Home and Cremations Services, Algonac. A private family committal service will be held at a later date in St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Algonac. Donations in Lois’ honor can be made to St. Catherine’s Church, The Algonac Lions Club or the St. Clair County Council on Aging Meals on Wheels Program.
