I was so very sorry to hear about Coach Ames. He was my friend, mentor, and father figure. He inspired me to become a teacher and coach--like him. I will never forget the life lessons he taught me. I am forever thankful and will never forget him. He profoundly touched the hearts and lives of so many! I am brother of Bob Sr's daughter in law, Hisayo. I have heard so many good things and seen so many nice photos and videos that Bob Jr. and Hisayo have shared of Bob Sr's time with and love for his family, including my sister and my nieces, Hanaki Joanne and Sara Joelle, his granddaughters. I have great respect for him and I feel fortunate to be a part of the extended Ames family. I feel great joy to help Bob Jr. and Hisayo teach and raise Hanaki and Sara. Bless you and Rest in Peace.
I met Bob Sr. and Joanne Ames at the hospital where our granddaughter, Hanaki Joanne was born to my daughter Hisayo and their son Bob Jr. We all enjoyed the happiness of taking turns holding our newborn grandchild in our arms. I still keep the picture of him and Hanaki on my living room wall here in Osaka. It is one of my treasures and treasured memories for life! Rest in Peace, Bob Sr. and thank you very much for everything you did for the family.
Coach Ames & Jo opened their home & wonderful Fairfield Glades golf courses to our golf group with his son, Don. Coach would stock our rental unit with junk food and drinks for our annual 3 day trip. He was a delightful man and was most generous to us. After a profanity filled melt down by me on one of the evil holes at Fairfield Glades, Coach said "Let me show you something, Peter". Coach pointed out to me a stunning "burning bush" with vibrant, red leaves and said "isn't that beautiful?". Every Fall when the burning bushes turn red I think of Bob Ames and his beautiful burning bushes. He was a wonderful, positive person.
i remember watching Bob compete as an iconic athlete while growing up as a junior high student, in Algonac "back when". He was one of the greatest competitors to ever graduate from AHS and I can think of NO one else from the "village" who played football at the University of Michigan. I met Bob again while he was in administration in Utica Schools. I was teaching and coaching in Pontiac at the time......This was one of those "small world" coincidences. It was very special for me to meet him after many years had passed and rather satisfying to know that we had both had opted to give of ourselves to young people. I ran into Bob again some years later at an Algonac High School Hall of Fame Induction. In addition, I remember his sisters Carol and Mary who I went to AHS with. Bob touched thousands of people over his 86 years and will not be forgotten for the selfless and loving human being he was. My condolences to the family as each of you share the many indelible memories you created with Bob. Peace!

Joanne and beautiful family. I just got goosebumps seeing this post. I am so sorry to hear this news. I know he has had a tough time for awhile. I am so glad you and Bob moved back to Michigan so you could be near your family. I called you a few weeks ago when I was on vacation. Hoping to get together for a cup of tea. I think of you often and miss our lunches together. Rest In Peace Bob, you were certainly an amazing husband, father, grandfather, friend, sportsman, the list goes on!
