Helen Irene Avers, age 86, of Pearl Beach, died Saturday, March 22, 2025 at Orchard Grove Senior Living in Romeo after a short illness. She was born September 11, 1938 in Three Rivers and had been an area resident for 58 years. Sh Read Obituary
Aunt Helen and Roger used to share incredible summer parties on the farm as we grew up. My Mom loved her sister and made sure they stayed close even after we moved to Nevada. Aunt Helen is the last Turner to pass of all her siblings. I hope she, Carole, Jess and Bud have some parties up in heaven and enjoy their reunion.
Helen used to make me laugh when she would mispronounce words almost as a way to get me to interact- back when Julie and I lived in Mississauga Ontario, Helen would pronounce it “Mrs. Swag uh” and I would correct her saying it’s pronounced “Mrs. Saw guh” I would counter with something like “we are going to “Mack in ack” island and she would be quick to reply stating, it’s “Mack in aw”.
I think that she knew how to pronounce the words , but she just wanted to get my reactions and start another word pronunciation exchange!
I had seen Helen & Roger this past summer at the Flaming Grill in Algonac. I grew up in the neighborhood and remember hanging out with the family. I stopped at their table to say hi and she was looking to me like she knew me. Then when I said my name she says "oh the milkmans daughter". Great memories of Pearl Beach.

I remember thinking how cool your mom was that time she let us take flour and water in to your room and pretend we were cooking. That was fun! And she always had the best Kool-Aide. So many great memories, she will be missed.
Funny story was when grandpa roger was on one home phone in their house and trying to call my mom julie and she didn’t answer so grandpa left a voice mail saying “hey gordie and julie i just wanted to ask you-“ and then my grandma helen picked up the second phone in their house thinking someone was calling and went “mmm hello?…” and cut my grandpa off while talking and my grandpa yelled to her “get off the phone what’s the matter with you!!!” and my family over at my mom and dads house was really confused because we just got a voicemail of my grandma and grandpa yelling at eachother on different phones it was really funny listening to it’s still funny to this day. that was probably 10 years ago or so
My dad’s favorite story is how he met my mom at Western Michigan University. He failed an English class in his freshman year, so he had to take the class over in his Sophmore year. My mom was in that English class. She ended up helping him pass that class, and they fell in love. He said he couldn’t stop looking at her and she was always blushing. A 65 year love story. 🩷
My funniest memory is when I was in my Dorothy Hamil phase. My mom was resting on the living room couch with her long blonde hair sealing over the arm cushion. I asked her if I could cut her hair so it matched Dorothy’s. She said, “Sure.” I had the perfect blunt cut or so I thought! When my mom stood up the sides of her hair were uneven and looked nothing like Dorothy Hamil. The next thing I remember was my mom racing me down Pearl Beach in the blue station wagon to visit with Velma Williams. To say the least, I was never allowed to cut my mom’s hair ever again!
