Memories of Bob Poole
Bob was my mother's cousin. So, we always had that connection. My first memories of Bob came soon after he and Anita were married and they moved near our house on Mill Street. The street was unpaved in those days and whenever they drove past our house in their old Willys car, a great cloud of dust would follow them. They soon became our good neighbors and friends and remained so for our entire lives. They were regulars at the Bible study group held at my parents' home. They soon became active members in the St. Clair River Drive Church of Christ.
When Bob became Algonac’s first walking postman, he and his dog Spike could be seen every day making the rounds. Spike was a real smart dog. Bob taught him lots of tricks. He was the only dog I ever knew who could climb a tree (it was that famous big oak tree by the old town hall). Sometimes Bob and I would go pheasant hunting with Spike as our hunting dog. He could scent the pheasants all right but many times they would run instead of fly. Spike was not a pointer or a setter dog so he would just race after them. So we had to run after them and when the bird finally flushed, we were puffing so hard that we could not take a steady aim. I would miss but Bob usually didn't.
Bob and Anita loved to fish, and they knew all the best spots to drop a fish lure. They would always tell my Uncle Linn and I where the best fishing spots were and how to line up our boat. One of Bob’s greatest joys was when Anita caught that trophy perch which they had mounted on the wall.
Bob and Anita were a great help to my folks when they were sick and cared for them many times when I was unable to be there.
Bob’s service at the church was one of his great joys. He loved his fellow Christians and being a shepherd to care for them was an inspiration to us all. Bob always had a smile, a joke or a kind word for everyone he met. He appreciated his many friends and will be greatly missed. We look forward to seeing him and Anita along with many other friends and family when we gather together around God’s throne.
