Sallie grew up during the depression and moved with her family to several places as her dad looked for work. But she always ended up living with her Grandma and Daddy Bill in Algonac. Where she graduated from Algonac in 1949.
She married George Highstreet on September 13, 1951, and raised her 3 boys on High Road. Sallie was very active in her boy's lives "? Cub Scout leader, never missing any sporting event, and youth group leader at the Algonac Church of Christ. Sallie was an automatic chaperone for any school or church event. Her boys were her life.
After 33 years of marriage "? she went through a divorce. Sallie found strength in her family and in God.
She became program director at Council on Ageing "? started a late-life divorce support group, a senior citizen prom, a yearly variety show "Off Your Rockers" and traveled around the world with her senior citizen group. Sallie lived by the motto "it is not what happens to you in life, it is how you react to it"?" and Sallie's reaction was to give to God, trust in His strength, His mercy, His grace and His love.
On December 28, 1988, Sallie found love again, when she married Johannes Spreen
For the next 21 years she shared a wonderful and beautiful life with a very special man.
Summers on the St. Clair River, winters in Sun City, Arizona "? travelling wherever she wanted to go "? providing her with whatever she needed. Johannes gave her love, support and happiness.
One of Sallie's biggest thrills came on October 14, 1998, when she was crowned "Ms Senior Michigan" for 1999. And from that moment on we had to refereed to her as "Queen Sallie"?
Sallie age positively to the very end, always looking for the best in everyone. She never had a lack of words and spoke her mind "? but it was always with a loving and caring heart. She was a prayer warrior and a letter writer to anyone that needed support. And an active member of the Algonac Church of Christ to the very end.
Sallie lived a life of no regrets and unconditional love for family and was the perfect example of how a Christian woman should live. As she said "of all the things you wear, your expression is the most important"?
And her favorite verse was from Psalms 118:24 "?"This is the day the Lord has made, and I will rejoice and be glad in it"?"?
Sallie will be truly missed - she left this earth surrounded by love and now she is in heaven surrounded by unimaginable love"? and she wanted everyone not to be sad that she is gone but rejoice that we had the time together to share a life.
